"Ally McCoist's chucking the towel in"; Celtic hero Chris Sutton taken aback by derby claim
Chris Sutton can’t quite believe his punditry colleague Ally McCoist is willing to see a weakened Rangers team fielded at Celtic Park on Sunday.
McCoist has called for next week’s Europa League semi-final against RB Leipzig to be prioritised by Giovanni van Bronckhorst despite having a chance to close the gap on Celtic to just three points.
The former Rangers striker told BT Sport: “We all know the importance of a Rangers-Celtic game, right? I think it’s safe to say Celtic are miles favourites and would take a monumental collapse for them not to win the title this year.
“With that in mind, you have to prioritise, I think, Thursday night’s game.”
Sutton couldn’t believe what he was hearing, retorting: “I mean, McCoist giving up? Wow. Ally McCoist’s chucking the towel in for the Glasgow Derby? I mean come on. Really? A game of this magnitude. Come on.”
I don’t think anyone should be expecting anything but a full-strength Rangers team on Sunday. I don’t think Van Bronckhorst would do that, frankly, with so much football left to be played.
He might make one or two tweaks to his eleven, but it won’t be a full rotation.
Ange Postecoglou made it quite clear today he wouldn’t be entertaining that notion either. He’s preparing his team for a very tough test.
Too much has been made of their European exploits impacting their domestic form. I made that mistake myself ahead of the semi-final. That was a lesson for us. We can’t take anything for granted here.
Celtic will be entirely focused on facing a Rangers more with more intent and belief than McCoist when it comes to the Premiership title. Which is probably Sutton’s point.
