La Liga side Athletic Bilbao took to Twitter on Friday to post a throwback of a clash against Celtic.

It is ten years to the day since the Hoops faced Athletic Club (to give them their proper name) in a mid-season friendly.

You probably don’t remember much about the game, and with good reason.

The clash at Bilbao’s former ground San Mamés finished goalless although it was described as a “good little friendly” by the Celtic Wiki.

That trusted source of historical Celtic content also say that Hoops boss Neil Lennon was sent to the stands for “an innocuous challenge to a decision.”

Some things never change.

Bilbao game is one of many mid-season Celtic friendlies

Bilbao took to their English language Twitter on Friday to post about the encounter.

Anthony Stokes was front and centre in most of the pictures and a little digging shows that he was the Celtic captain that night.

The full team was: Zaluska, Fraser, Loovens, Mulgrew, Chalmers, Cha, Herron, Conroy, Ljungberg, Stokes, Murphy.

Celtic went through a strange phase of playing friendly matches at random points in the season.

Remember the trip to Villareal? This writer certainly remembers being one of the 2,000 inside Celtic Park for a bizarre home friendly against AZ Alkmaar.

Given that Celtic had faltered badly under Tony Mowbray that season, it is probably no surprise that only 3% of Celtic Park decided to turn up.

Barcelona vs Inter Milan being on the telly at the same time probably didn’t help much either.

We know we asked for “extra value” this season Celtic. But don’t be getting any ideas.

In other news, Kieran Tierney has posted a brilliant social media message following the news of Scott Brown’s departure from Celtic
