Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou reveals the hilarious origins of the now iconic jumper

Ange Postecoglou and Celtic knitwear go hand in hand these days.

It’s become the iconic look supporters associate the manager with, a plain black jumper with his fist raised in the air.

And yet, it all happened by accident due to the nature of Postecoglou’s arrival from Japan in the middle of a global pandemic.

The manager arrived in Scotland completely alone – not even with his family – and the Celtic boss reckons the absence of his wife had a detrimental effect on his fashion sense!

Celtic FC Foundation have uploaded footage from their recent sporting dinner in March to TikTok that explains the origins of the knitted classic.

Postecoglou said: “Everything happened in a hurry. The opportunity came and I left Japan so I thought I’ll just pack bags and come over. My beautiful wife and kids couldn’t join me straight away.

“I’ve got no idea what I’m going to wear every day. My wife is there to guide me through that process. And so with her being away for the first game I just thought, ‘I’ll put on a jumper!’

“Now, I don’t what to tell you what the text message from my wife was when she saw me wearing a jumper at the game, but she said, ‘What are you doing?’ But then all of a sudden it became a thing, so there you go!”

We’ve all been there Ange so you definitely have my sympathies. Thankfully the Celtic supporters have taken to your look so there is no harm done. I’m sure there are a few more jumpers being worn around Glasgow these days!

These are the kinds of stories from the manager on the night that helped the Foundation raise an incredible £100,000 for good causes so fair play to him for entertaining those in attendance.

Ange even kindly provided a unique auction item for the event – he signed and donated one of the trademark jumpers!
