Celtic manager Neil Lennon has cooled talk regarding Odsonne Edouard’s potential contract extension.

The Daily Record reported this morning that Celtic were looking to extend Edouard’s contract in a bid to keep him for at least another year. His current deal is up in the summer of 2022 (Transfermarkt).

The Frenchman has been in stunning form this season with 26 goals in 43 games (Transfermarkt). However, with the striker building up his reputation on a weekly-basis, Celtic are reportedly keen to tie him down further.

However, speaking today at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s game vs Livingston, Lennon admitted there was nothing to report on Celtic’s end.

“I’d love to but that’s from the French side of things. There’s nothing from this side on the matter.”

Don’t expect news on this anytime soon

The Record stated that they didn’t believe an agreement was imminent, so Lennon’s update isn’t much of a surprise. You would imagine that Chief Executive Peter Lawwell will be the man handling any negotiations with Edouard’s advisors.

And if they are then it’s massive for the club. Our eyes have been fixated on 10-in-a-row for years now. Being able to tie down the best striker we’ve had throughout that run for the final year of it would be huge.

Celtic have to expect that Rangers will throw the kitchen sink at trying to stop us next season. Therefore, there must be no stone left unturned in our own quest to keep the squad strong. If we managed to keep Edouard for one more year, it would be a boost we didn’t think we would get.

However, in order for that to happen, he realistically has to pen a new deal. With his current one expiring in 2022, that would leave him with just one year remaining when we looked to sell. Considering the length of contract, clubs could likely get him on a cut-price deal in that scenario.

That wouldn’t be ideal. Edouard will hopefully know that Celtic would be happy to sell in 2021 if he extends further given it would maximise our chances of getting top-dollar for him. Hopefully that tips things to our advantage.

How big would it be for the club to tie Odsonne down on a new contract? Is it essential he’s here for the potential 10-in-a-row season? Let us know in the discussion forum below.
