Celtic duo left out of Scotland squad for crucial World Cup playoff

Celtic pair Anthony Ralston and David Turnbull have surprisingly been omitted from tonight’s Scotland squad to face Ukraine at Hampden.

The duo were called up as part of the June camp which will also involve 3 Nations League matches as well as a potential playoff final in Wales should the Scots win tonight.

However, neither man has managed to even make a squad appearance tonight despite impressive campaigns at Parkhead:

Callum McGregor has managed to make the starting XI tonight whilst Greg Taylor is on the bench.

But the surprising omissions have to be Turnbull and Ralston, both of whom will have hoped to have played a part.

Victory tonight for Steve Clarke’s side will set up the clash with Wales on Sunday, June 5th.

David Turnbull and Anthony Ralston miss out but Celtic still represented in Scotland team

Ralston and Turnbull have failed to play a major role in the World Cup qualifying campaign. But you can’t exactly say that’s why they’ve been left out tonight. Not when Aaron Hickey is starting despite not playing a single competitive minute for his country.

Celtic supporters will simply be hoping that there are no injury concerns with either man. Not after such a gruelling season.

Of course, it could be the case tonight that Clarke is simply deciding to save them both for the Nations League fixtures. Scotland will face Armenia [x2] and Ireland after the World Cup games. Important fixtures in their own right.

But you would still have liked to think that there would, at the very least, have been bench spots for both men at Hampden this evening. Especially for Ralston given the season he’s had.

Hopefully, Clarke will provide an explanation for this at some point this evening. Celtic fans will be itching to know an immediate status on both.
