The MLS has confirmed that Celtic will join up as one of 23 international academies to take part in the Generation Adidas Cup next month.

The famous youth competition is an opportunity for clubs to showcase their younger age groups and have them compete against sides from other parts of the world.

Manchester United, Roma, and Porto make up just some of the other big names involved in the tournament this year. There is also representation from clubs in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and Nigeria respectively. As many as 23 international academies will join the MLS clubs in taking part.

The competition breaks into 2 age groups – the U17s and U15s sections. Celtic will represent themselves in both. The 40 teams in both age levels divide into 10 groups of 4. 3 group stage matches will then be played to determine who qualifies for the knockout round.

All teams involved will be guaranteed 7 matches even if they’re eliminated from the group stage. These games will be 60 minutes in length with 30-minute halves. Select matches at Dallas’ Toyota Stadium will be 35-minute halves.

The MLS has also announced that more than 30 of these matches will be available to watch on Twitch and YouTube.

A big learning opportunity for Celtic youngsters

This is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for the Celtic youngsters to learn as much as possible about different playing styles and opponents. The same goes for the coaching staff too.

The Generation Cup has grown rapidly over the years stretching back to its inauguration in 2007. This year will see as many as 80 academy sides take part in what’s the biggest number of teams involved in the competition’s history.

Previous winners of the tournament at U17 level include DC United, River Plate, Stoke City, and Seattle Sounders to name a few. Celtic would love the opportunity to put their name on that list.

The competition will begin on April 9th, with the groups having already been drawn out. Celtic are due to face Austin, Seattle Sounders, and Sporting Kansas City at U15 level. The U17s, meanwhile, will play against Atlanta United, New England Revolution, and FC Cincinnati. A full list of fixtures can be viewed here.

It remains to be seen which of these matches will be available to view for free online. But regardless, it’s a tremendous opportunity for the young Hoops.

No doubt there’s some buzz going around the respective age groups.
