Celtic are reportedly taking a keen interest in out-of-favour Porto right-back Fernando Fonseca.

The full-back hasn’t been part of any of the previous 10 match-day squads for the Portuguese outfit. Porto, according to the Scottish Sun, are happy to do business with Celtic if they’re interested in Fonseca.

The report states that Celtic could seal a move for the full-back for around £2million. That would be right up Celtic’s street with regards to signing players on the cheap and hopefully moving them on for a profit. At just 21-years of age, that could very well be the plan should they move for Fonseca.

Mikael Lustig’s time at Celtic could be coming to an end soon. Talks about a new contract appear to have stalled, with many supporters believing he’s become a liability. A replacement this month is essential. and Brendan Rodgers clearly wants that.

In recent times, supporters have seen a lot more of Anthony Ralston. This could be a signal from Rodgers to the board that he wants a new right-back in now.

Nowhere near the Porto first-team

Fonseca is so far down the pecking order at Porto, however, that he currently plays for their B side. He made just three appearances for their second side last season.

He did, however, impress at Estoril last season during a short loan spell there. This led to some heavy interest from Juventus, who wanted to loan the youngster with an option to buy. Porto, however, wanted any bids to be permanent last summer.

Celtic have, of course, yet to actually make a formal offer. At the minute the move remains speculation until an approach from the Hoops is made. The need for a new right-back, however, is great with time also running out in the window.

The club have also been linked with Timothy Castagne and Omar Elabdellaoui this January. Disappointingly, however, it looks from the outside as though the club have turned away at the thought of spending any real cash on the position.

We’ll have to wait and see if something therefore comes of this latest link.
