Celtic may have missed out on the signing of Romaine Sawyers this summer as the midfielder closes in on a move to West Brom.
Neil Lennon’s men had been linked with a move for the 27-year-old Brentford man in recent weeks although the trail had quickly gone cold.
And now it seems that that’s because West Brom have moved to get their man – agreeing a £2.9million fee according to the Daily Mail.
Celtic didn’t need Sawyers
It’s never nice to lose out on any player. However, Celtic fans shouldn’t be too downbeat about not signing Sawyers.
If there’s one area of the pitch that we’re well covered in it’s midfield. Sawyers can play either in the centre of the pitch or slightly further up the field but the truth is that Celtic have numerous options in both areas.
Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie and Scott Brown have all made good starts to the new campaign and look pretty certain to get the majority of game time this coming season barring any injuries.
Behind them are the likes of Olivier Ntcham, Nir Bitton and new recruit Luca Connell. Tom Rogic is still to make his return in the more advanced role while Ewan Henderson has also shown that he has lots to offer.
The harsh reality is that Celtic didn’t need Sawyers at all. The Nevisian man could have added something to our setup but it’s hardly worth upsetting the future playing time of Connell or Henderson.
Celtic are just fine in that area of the pitch. It’s elsewhere that there are still some worries.
