Celtic left-back Boli Bolingoli has joined Russian top-flight club FC Ufa on loan until the end of the season.

Bolingoli, with just two appearances for Celtic this season, looked to be well below Greg Taylor, Liam Scales and even Adam Montgomery in the pecking order at Parkhead. Having spent last season on loan in Turkey with Istanbul Besaksehir, there was hope that the Belgian would reignite his early promise at Celtic.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t come to pass. And now, according to FC Ufa’s website, Bolingoli has secured a landing spot for the rest of the 21-22 season.

Ufa currently sit second-bottom of the Russian top-flight [BBC]. They’ve won just 3 games this season, and are clearly looking to Bolingoli for defensive know-how and an attacking edge to get them out of a relegation fight.

Bolingoli’s career at Celtic had looked doomed after an ill-fated excursion to Spain early in the 20-21 season. After that, he was fined and loaned out to Turkey, where he struggled with injuries. That said, he did manage to garner 18 total appearances for the side [Transfermarkt].

Celtic left-back Boli Bolingoli was something of a forgotten man at Parkhead

It was pretty clear from the start of Ange’s time at Celtic that Greg Taylor, then Liam Scales, would be the preferred options at left-back.

That said, Bolingoli’s attitude this season has been impressive. On social media, he’s always seemed desperate to play for Celtic, and has had the backing of his teammates. In two outings this season, he’s actually been decent, and we love a redemption arc.

However, Bolingoli’s future doesn’t look to be at Celtic.

It certainly won’t be for the remainder of this season, and it’d be a huge surprise to see him in the first-team next campaign.

With Adam Montgomery also out on loan, Ange Postecoglou has done well to prune his defence. That said, Vasilis Barkas remains at the club, despite interest in the goalkeeper during the January transfer window.
