Darren Mackie makes Aberdeen claim ahead of Celtic clash
Former Aberdeen favourite Darren Mackie says the pressure will all be on Celtic when they travel to Pittodrie this Sunday.
The Hoops sit top of the Premiership after the recent 6-0 drubbing of Ross County but they know things will be a little tougher when they take on Derek McInnes’ side at the weekend.
The Dons are coming off a terrific 3-0 victory away to Motherwell on Saturday, and Mackie reckons that could put them in good stead for the visit of the Champions.
“I’m not sure if there is a good time to play Celtic, even after a European game, but the game against Lazio will be difficult,” Mackie told the Press and Journal.
“The Dons have nothing to lose and all the pressure will be on Celtic.
“They have shown they have the ability to match Celtic.
“Aberdeen tend to give Celtic a very tough game at home and I’m sure Derek McInnes will have the players fired up for it.”
Mackie isn’t familiar with how Aberdeen vs Celtic games usually go
Many Celtic fans will be doubting Mackie’s final comment on the recent toughness of trips to Pittodrie. Since our glory period began in the middle of 2016, we’ve travelled up north to face the Dons on six occasions – and won all six.
Some of those meetings have been by a single goal but there have also been two 3-0 wins and a couple of two goal victories.
Sunday will be our 17th meeting against McInnes’ side in the past four seasons and our record is very impressive. We’ve won 14 of the 16 clashes, drawing one and losing one – a meaningless match back at the end of the 2017/2018 season.
So Celtic shouldn’t take anything for granted when they travel to Pittodrie on Sunday. The defeat to Livingston proved what can happen when you do that. But they also shouldn’t fear about the trip in any way. It’s one of our favoured hunting grounds.
