Dom McKay's next Celtic move after Carl Starfelt must be a new right-back
Carl Starfelt is here and it’s a massive relief for the Celtic support.
Yes, we wanted our signings in before the UCL qualifiers began. But just to get Starfelt in the door is a big step for Ange Postecoglou. He needed a Kristoffer Ajer replacement and he’s got on.
If Celtic eke past Midtjylland in the second leg of our second qualifying round next week, there’ll have been no damage done. But even so, fans will want those priority positions covered regardless of whether it’s Champions League or Europa League football in the next round.
And after Dom McKay finally managed to land Starfelt, there’s only one position that should be on his mind next – right-back.
Yes, if Postecoglou doesn’t have a replacement for Anthony Ralston in the next week, he’s entitled to be tearing his hair out.
A big seven days ahead for Dom McKay as Carl Starfelt signs for Celtic
The registration deadline for the third qualifying round of the UCL is on July 29th [UEFA]. Meaning the CEO has around a week to source a new right-back for his manager.

I don’t want to go in on Ralston. He is what he is. He’s a hard worker and gives 100% every time he pulls on the Celtic jersey. But he lacks pace, power, or a decent delivery. He’s just not what we need and we’ve known this for several years now.
With Chris Jullien returning to action and Stephen Welsh stepping up, centre-back looks sorted for now. Another addition would be ideal, but it’s not essential just now. The same can’t be said of the right-back area.
We can’t be going into either the next round of Europe or the first Premiership game of the season vs Hearts with Ralston in there. It’s clear Postecoglou isn’t keen on throwing in Lee O’Connor either.
Our transfer priority list is still extensive of course. It won’t be over when Celtic land a new right-back. But it’s the standout issue at the football club at the moment.
Things have gone quiet on Rennes’ Brandon Soppy and George Baldock, whilst Sacha Boey has reportedly rejected the Hoops [L’Equipe]. All we’re hoping for is that Celtic are close to an agreement with someone. Anyone at this rate.
