Gerry Creaney confident about Celtic performance in summer transfer window

Former Celtic striker Gerry Creaney is confident that the club will reinvest wisely this summer and replace Odsonne Edouard.

Edouard is expected to leave the club this summer with just a year left on his contract. The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move to Leicester City.

A link up with former boss Brendan Rodgers makes perfect sense. It’s doubtful Celtic will stand in his way if a decent offer is made.

Getting a good price will be crucial, because we need to buy a new first-choice striker. Albian Ajeti has so far not shown he is capable of being anything more than a squad option.

Creaney isn’t too concerned though. He reckons the club have earned the right to be trusted when it comes to a big-performing Edouard replacement.

He told The Scottish Sun: “Only one or two players in the world are irreplaceable. Celtic have a fantastic reputation for pulling one out the bag. No one had heard much about Odsonne when he first came — and he lit up the Premiership.

“There was Moussa Dembele not long ago. Go way back to Mark Viduka, Pierre van Hooijdonk and Henrik Larsson. Historically, that position has been filled by some high-quality players. And I don’t think it devalues anything if you haven’t heard a great deal about them.

“The majority were shrewd signings. That’s down to the scouting system. Hopefully Celtic attract someone of a similar ilk who is going to get goals and be a talisman in the big games.”

Postecoglou Celtic reign could depend on quality Odsonne Edouard replacement

Even in a poor 2020/21 Celtic season, Edouard was easily one of our best performers. Again scoring more than 20 goals, he still showed his quality even if it wasn’t quite on as consistent a basis than previous years.

Frankly it’s a contribution we have to replace. If Ange Postecoglou and the recruitment team at Celtic don’t get in a calibre of striker that can carry that scoring load, it’ll be curtains for the new era before if even gets properly started.

Hopefully the club have put in the hard yards when it comes to scouting already. If we haven’t, Postecoglou can hardly be blamed. However, he needs to sign off on the right Edouard replacement and quickly.
