Griffiths accuses Celtic fans of short memories; launches Lennon defence

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has had a bizarre pop at the fans regarding the future of Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell.

Supporters have been left absolutely fizzing with how the 2020/21 campaign has gone this season. Out of Europe with a whimper, bundled out the League Cup at home to Ross County, and now 23 points behind Rangers.

In any other season and under any other manager, Celtic would normally have done the right thing by now. The manager would’ve been out the door and a new set up would’ve come in by now.

Yet still the board digs its heels in and ignores fan complaints. However, in comments that certainly don’t help the club, Griffiths has accused the fans of having short memories and thinking that 10-in-a-row would’ve been easy.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Griffiths said: “You need to remember what these guys have done for the club. Yeah, the fans support us and we love them. But fans forget what those two have done for the club. The gaffer has won five out of six since he came back.

“Mr Lawwell has won the last nine domestic league titles and guided us to a quadruple Treble. The fans are hurting more than any of us. It’s up to us players to put that right.

“They have wanted this for so long. They have been singing about it. They thought it was a foregone conclusion that we were just going to turn up this season and win the ten. It doesn’t work like that. You need to earn the right to win trophies.”

Griffiths comments on Celtic fans a dangerous game to play; nothing can defend Lennon now

The Celtic supporters already feel a strong level of disconnect with the football club just now. Comments like these from Griffiths certainly don’t help in that regard.

All you hear from Lennon defenders is this idea of looking back at what he’s done for the club. That’s fine, but why have we to ignore what he’s actually doing now?

You cannot just ignore the facts of the 2020/21 season and say “yeah, but he was good last season”. The past doesn’t matter. Lennon has had his credit for that. It’s the present that we’re all focusing on and the present is incredibly bleak for Celtic fans.

No Hoops supporter thought the 10 would be a total stroll. What we believed was that we were stronger than Rangers and would out-run them in the marathon of the Scottish Premiership. That hasn’t happened.

Yet it’s the embarrassing nature of how the campaign has turned out that infuriates us. The lack of a fight or even a title-race is what has fans up in arms. If Lennon was still neck-and-neck with Rangers, nobody would be calling for him to go.

But this was the season we were all waiting for, and the club has made a real mess of it. That’s one thing you certainly cannot put on the fans’ shoulders.

In other news, a report has indicated that a Neil Lennon signing looks set to leave this month.
