Celtic captain Callum McGregor has opened up on Ange Postecoglou’s motivational team talks as he explains he does them “constantly”.

A clip emerged on Celtic’s social media on Thursday showing Ange’s team-talk for the Premier Sports Cup final against Hibernian at Hampden. Ange pushed the idea of following in the footsteps of greatness and fighting for the shirt.

It was a rousing speech and clearly left the Celtic players in high spirits as they saw through a 2-1 success to bag Ange his first piece of silverware as manager.

McGregor was asked about the manager’s team talks in the build-up to today’s clash with Rangers. It’s fair to say he’s been impressed with what he gaffer has had to offer in that regard too.

As quoted by the National, McGregor said: “He speaks really well. He’s been doing that all season. He comes in and he’s really motivational when he speaks. He makes the players feel 10 feet tall.

“When you back that up with good structure, good organisation, and everyone knowing their job, then it can make you feel really good when you go out on that pitch. You feel really safe and secure and you know you’ve got your mates around you to help you.

“He’s been doing that all season for us. He’s given us huge amounts of confidence and belief within the squad that we can go out on the pitch and look after each other and play our football.”

Ange Postecoglou may not need to say much ahead of Rangers vs Celtic

There are times where Ange will feel it’s appropriate to get the message through to his squad. There are certain occasions where the importance of it needs to be highlighted. It needs to be packaged and put through the players in a manner that will have them even more motivated for success.

Normally, you could say a Glasgow derby would be one of those. But at the same time, it would be surprising if any of our players needed extra motivation to get the job done this afternoon.

What we’re experiencing today isn’t something that comes around regularly. There’s nothing more insulting to Rangers than Celtic winning on their own turf. However, when you add the greater significance of the league championship more or less being up for grabs, it’s even more essential this time around.

Victory for the Hoops today would leave this being a match remembered for years and years. It would be etched into the memories of Celtic supporters forever. Because if we get the win today, chances are the league championship is almost certainly going to follow.

Ange will undoubtedly give his players a pre-match boost. The occasion will probably make him feel as though the situation demands it. But the Celtic players really should be finding the motivation within them to put in a performance this afternoon.

A monumental opportunity awaits us today. Hopefully, we can make the most of it.
