Italian Report: Celtic target Aaron Hickey subject of intensified talks between Bologna and Fiorentina
Talks between Bologna and Fiorentina over Celtic target Aaron Hickey have intensified, according to Italian outlet La Nazione [print edition, 07/07, page 67].
The newspaper reports that Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic doesn’t want to lose Hickey this summer. However, Fiorentina are said to be extremely keen on doing a deal. Mihajlovic wants to continue to work with the player on his development after a season-ending shoulder injury last term.
Yesterday, Il Resto del Carlino reported that Bologna were valuing the left-back at a staggering fee of €8m [£6.8m]. However, La Nazione now states that no deal under €5m will even be considered [£4.3m].
That would mean that Celtic still remain a small way off from Bologna’s valuation. The Scottish Sun said over the weekend that the Hoops were confident of reaching an agreement. It was said, however, that we had bid £3.5m for Hickey’s services.
That’s not a figure that will get Bologna around the negotiating table. Especially with Mihaijlovic wanting to keep Hickey where he is and continue to develop him.
Celtic can’t underestimate Fiorentina interest in Aaron Hickey; Bologna hold all the cards
This is, quite simply, becoming a saga. It’s taking a touch longer than many of us would like to get a solution here. Granted, Fiorentina’s interest certainly hasn’t helped matters.
It’s promising that Celtic appear to be close to a valuation Bologna may start to look at, but it’s important we’re reasonable about things. We have to ask ourselves whether Hickey would be a wise investment at £4.3m. Especially if Bologna potentially consider that as a starting point for negotiation.
Fiorentina could easily be in a better position to do this if it’s one of their main priorities this summer. The idea they’re already intensifying talks with Bologna, again, isn’t ideal. This could only drive up the player’s transfer fee too.
Then again, it’s important to remember Hickey will have an opinion about all of this too. Fiorentina finished below Bologna last season and can’t really be considered a massive step-up. Why Hickey would want to take a sideways step is anyone’s guess.
Celtic need to keep moving quickly however to avoid being pipped. So long as the fee is right for the club there’s no point sitting back and waiting to see what happens between Fiorentina and Bologna.
The next few days are going to be extremely interesting with regards to this one.
