The reaction to Jeremy Toljan’s performance in the 2-1 win over Hearts yesterday hasn’t been favourable.

Sections of the Celtic support have been taking to Twitter to go through the German for yet another grim performance in green-and-white. Since signing on-loan from Borussia Dortmund in January, Toljan has managed 14 appearances.

But he hasn’t looked as uncomfortable as he did against Hearts yesterday. Celtic may have picked up their eighth consecutive Premiership trophy at Parkhead, but the Dortmund man didn’t avoid criticism.

With Kieran Tierney missing, it was he who Neil Lennon turned to in a bid to solve the problem position. And reacting to Toljan’s performance on Twitter, not many Hoops fans were too enthralled.

Typical of Rodgers’ recruitment

To be fair to Toljan, he was out of position yesterday. You could excuse the woeful display for simply him being on his weaker side. But the fact is that the German hasn’t impressed in his strong position either.

Toljan simply sums up Rodgers’ recruitment. A player signed with high hopes, only for him to flatter to deceive and to lose his place in the team. File under the same bracket as Dorus de Vries, Cristian Gamboa, and Eboue Kouassi respectively.

It looks as though he’s likely played his last game for the club now too. With Mikael Lustig more than likely back for the Scottish Cup final, Toljan will head back to Germany in the summer. If Celtic were to revisit this deal, it would be absolutely mind-boggling.

Overall, Toljan can leave with his winner’s medal and hopefully a Scottish Cup one to his name too. Nobody will say he didn’t give his all in Glasgow, but he simply hasn’t been a good enough footballer.

Celtic will need to find a proper top quality replacement in the summer, with right-back becoming a real problem position. And if one thing’s for sure – Toljan isn’t the answer.
