Celtic supporter liaison officer John Paul Taylor has detailed his ‘biggest achievement’ in his role at the club, in an interview with SD Europe, an organisation which advocates for supporter involvement in the running of football clubs.
Taylor said that introducing safe standing to Celtic Park has to go down as the biggest achievement so far.
“I think the biggest achievement was being part of the team that helped Celtic become the first major Football Club in the UK to introduce safe standing.” he said, as quoted by SD Europe.
He then went on to discuss how the safe standing has improved things at Celtic Park.
“A huge success”
“The initiative has been a huge success and as well as providing a safer alternative to standing in seated areas it has helped re-energise the atmosphere at Celtic Park.”
The Celtic SLO seems justifiably proud of the safe seating, and so he should be. It has been a huge success at Celtic Park.
He is correct about how it has improved the atmosphere, especially in European nights. Celtic gambled on introducing safe seats, but it has paid off so far.
Makes the club unique
It is yet another thing about Celtic that makes the club unique.
Perhaps one day safe seating will be expanded to more areas of the stadium. That would be something worth discussing with Taylor, if he feels that is possible.
However, for the moment the safe standing is in one area of the stadium, and a fine sight it is to see for the Celtic support.
There are many things that Celtic can be proud of in recent years. The superb run of trophies is obviously the most important. But the introduction of safe standing shouldn’t be looked down upon.
