Neil Lennon is adamant that Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer won’t be leaving the club any time soon. Reports in Italy suggested that Milan were interested in signing the Hoops centre-half.
However, Lennon has indicated that instead of Ajer being sold, he wants to give the player a new contract.
“We would like to extend his contract eventually. We’d gauge that as we go along but there’s been no contact from Milan” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.
“Kris is a fantastic player and has pretty much played every minute for me. He has been outstanding, and we have high hopes for him.”
Lennon’s comments will come as a relief to the Celtic support. Ajer has been in exceptional form for the Hoops in recent months.
He is now a mainstay of the Celtic side, and most recently featured in the 7-0 win over St Johnstone. It would be a good idea for the Hoops to get Ajer on a new deal, even though his current one still has three years left to run.
New contract would be a just reward
An increase in wages would be a just reward, after how well he has played for the Hoops since Neil Lennon has been in charge in particular.
Ajer’s next test for the Hoops will be to help the side return to the Champions League group stages. If he can maintain his current level of form, then he will play a big part in helping Celtic achieve that goal.
