The Daily Star recently reported that Celtic are one of five clubs “keen” on Liam Lindsay.

Many in Scotland will recognise the name too. Lindsay came through the ranks at Partick Thistle, and spent five years there before leaving for England back in 2017.

Since joining Barnsley, Lindsay has been going from strength to strength. He’s made 85 appearances for the Tykes, and is on a terrific run of seven consecutive shutouts. In total this season, out of 41 matches in which Lindsay has featured in, 21 have ended with clean sheets.

He’s therefore helped push Barnsley into a real promotion push for the Championship this season. They sit just five points behind leaders Luton Town.

During his days with Partick. Lindsay was known for his ability to play out from the back and his confidence in possession. He’s carried that reputation down to England. He’s now being courted by the likes of Aston Villa, Leeds, and Brighton too. Therefore, he has plenty of suitors.

What may put Celtic off is the reported £5million price tag quoted in the Daily Star. But this would be a youthful and smart signing on Celtic’s part should they manage to pull it off.

Not the finished article

Lindsay is by no means the finished article, and fits into Celtic’s profile of young players with development in them.

With Dedryck Boyata out of contract at the end of the season, and Filip Benkovic certain to rejoin parent club Leicester, Celtic need some ambition at centre-back. Splashing some cash is essential if they’re to make sure Boyata and Benkovic’s departures aren’t too detrimental.

Lindsay would be an ideal figure to come in and reinvigorate the Hoops defence. So long as, of course, it’s alongside a marquee signing at centre-back alongside him.

This is an area Celtic can’t take any chances with. Spending substantial sums on it would be ideal, and Lindsay represents strong potential for good money at £5m.

Celtic aren’t likely to make any moves just yet. It’s vital that all new signings in the summer are ticked off by the new manager next season. You have to wonder, therefore, whether this is a Neil Lennon target, should the report be true.

But Lindsay is a solid centre-back who’s improved year-on-year. Celtic could steal a march on the English outfits by snapping him up now. If they don’t, it could be something we regret a couple of years down the line.
