Celtic interim manager Neil Lennon denied any reports that he is interested in Silas Wamangituka.
The Hoops boss was reported to be at the Ligue 2 match between Paris FC and Valenciennes during the week. This was apparently to run the rule over forwards as Lennon prioritises one in the summer.
Wamangituka has scored just nine goals and made one assist in 27 Ligue 2 appearances this season. And, fortunately, it doesn’t look as though he’s on Celtic’s radar for now.
But, speaking to the Daily Record, Lennon wasn’t keen on opening up on his transfer plans, but did reveal one area in which he wants to strengthen.
“It wasn’t him (Wamangituka). But we are looking at players. Centre-forward is a position I would look at.”
A more important question to be asked here
So Lennon is basically dismissing the idea that Celtic were looking at Wamangituka. But there is a more important question to be asked here – what does this mean about Lennon’s own position at Celtic?
Surely he wouldn’t have been allowed to head to France to scout players if he wasn’t still in the running? Many fans are now at the stage where they don’t want Lennon next season. The Northern Irishman had to prove to supporters that he was the man for the job. But the turgid football since he walked in the door has proven otherwise.
So why, then, is he being allowed to go and scout for next season? Surely, at this stage, it doesn’t matter what happens between now and the end of the campaign? At Celtic it’s about entertainment, and this Hoops team under Lennon hasn’t been entertaining for long spells.
Celtic still have trips to Pittodrie and Ibrox before the cup final. If they win both of those, there are still no guarantees that many will want Lennon to stay on. That shows just how boring the football has been since he arrived.
But, despite that, he’s still being allowed to go on scouting missions. That would lead you to believe that some good results in the final few games could earn him the job. In any case, there’s no certainty in any of this. But if Lennon is still being considered for the role, it would be disappointing at this stage.
