Leigh Griffiths has been in excellent form for Celtic in pre-season so far. He has scored in both of the games he started in for the Hoops.

His progress after returning from off-field problems last season has impressed Celtic boss Neil Lennon. He admits that the player deserves praise for finding the back of the net, no matter the quality of opposition.

“No matter the opposition, to score quality goals like that shows that he’s a quality player and a quality finisher” Lennon told Celtic TV, as cited by the BBC.

“Come a long way”

“It’s just pure instinct with him. He knows he needs to get a little bit fitter, but he’s come a long way in a short space of time.”

Griffiths might have only just returned to first-team action. But he looks set to be a vitally important player for the Hoops in the weeks ahead.

Must be in manager’s plans for Champions League

With only Odsonne Edouard the other striker currently available for the Hoops, Griffiths must be under consideration for a start against Sarajevo in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday.

Normally it could be considered too early to start Griffiths, who has only played a few pre-season friendlies since December.

So important are the Champions League games though, that Lennon may consider starting Griffiths. Only time will tell on that front. However, it is a good sign for both the player and Celtic that he has not forgotten where the back of the net is.
