Celtic manager Neil Lennon would give Odsonne Edouard a five-year deal at the club if he could, The Scottish Sun report.

The heroic manager, who has guided the Hoops to a win in every domestic match so far in 2020, has been speaking enthusiastically about his French striker this week.

However, he’s admitted he isn’t the man to speak to about the player’s contract situation, suggesting that talks on a new deal haven’t taken place.

Reports emerged in The Daily Record earlier this week that Celtic had been in discussions with the player for some time, but the manager has refuted that.

In fact, he hasn’t even broached the subject with the main man Peter Lawwell yet.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Lennon said of the situation when it was raised by reporters: “You’re asking the wrong man.

“I’d give him a five-year deal tomorrow if I could, but I don’t know anything about that. I would know if there were talks.

“If there’s something in the offing then that would be great, but I haven’t touched on it with Peter Lawwell yet.

“He’s improving all the time. He is a talismanic player for us and he’s been absolutely magnificent this season. There’s more to come from him and I hope he’s doing that here with us.”

Edouard’s contract doesn’t expire until 2022 but everything is shaping up to suggest that this summer is a critical one when it comes to his future at Celtic Park.

With The Daily Record reporting big bids are expected in the upcoming transfer window, tying the player down to a new, lucrative deal should be one of the club’s big priorities over the coming weeks and months.

Hopefully, Lawwell and other decision-makers at Celtic Park get a move on and get talking to Edouard’s representatives.

We don’t want this situation rumbling on for longer than it needs to and if there’s an indication he’d prefer a move this summer, we need to adequately prepare for his departure or make it clear he’s staying for another season at least.
