Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala has called out Neil Lennon for failing to give him the appropriate level of game-time at Celtic.

The one main decision that appears to have stayed with the Poland U21 international was when Ryan Christie was featuring over him in the early stages of last season.

Lennon was struggling for a centre-forward option due to injuries and fitness concerns. Yet despite having Klimala available for big UCL qualifiers, Lennon went with Chrisite up top instead and paid the price.

Klimala, now with New York Red Bulls after his summer move, has hit out at the former Celtic boss for the decision he still can’t understand even today.

As quoted by Football Scotland, Klimala said: “I was angry but I didn’t understand it. I think everyone in my case would be angry because you have a striker available and you play a number 10 as a striker? Maybe the manager didn’t trust me enough, I don’t know.

“It wasn’t one game, it was a couple of games like that. When I was at Celtic I would think about it but it’s completely done and I still have no idea why. I never spoke about it with Neil Lennon.

“I never complained about why I’m not playing. I never spoke to anyone about why I wasn’t playing and they didn’t speak to me either because they knew that I don’t like complaining. I just did my job and maybe that wasn’t good enough, I don’t know.”

Patryk Klimala was never the right fit at Celtic

Klimala had reason to be disappointed with Lennon’s decision back then. Being the only fit and available striker yet still not being utilised was dreadful for him.

However, Celtic fans got to see Klimala in action on 28 occasions over the course of an 18-month period. We were able to see enough in that time to know that he simply wasn’t of the standard to be a Celtic regular.

It was a bad look at the time. Celtic had massive games on their agenda. It looked as though Klimala was a cert for game-time. Yet, in the end, he was consistently snubbed by Lennon.

It was no real surprise to see him depart either. He hadn’t been impressing and, taking into account his renaissance in the USA, it looks as though he’s found a home.

But at the time, this was a decision that even Celtic fans were furious with. It’s no wonder Klimala himself was left reeling. One of many bizarre Lennon decisions last season.
