Celtic are keeping tabs on the situation surrounding Newcastle United youngster Joe White, according to the Chronicle.

The English talent is one of Newcastle Academy’s top performers with the U23s. However, he’s now into the final year of his contract and is free to speak to clubs in January about a potential pre-contract in the summer.

The Chronicle reports that Celtic are one of the clubs keen. Rangers are also said to be interested, as well as EPL, Bundesliga, and Eredivisie interest.

White has yet to make an appearance for the Newcastle senior side. However, he was on the bench at Old Trafford back in September. The central midfielder has 4 goals to his name with the U23s this season too [Transfermarkt].

White spoke last month about his happiness with the Toon [Shields Gazette]. However, there are no signs as of yet that his contract is set to be renewed.

That could give the likes of Celtic and co to pitch their vision to White without having to splash out a considerable fee to speak to him.

Celtic move for Joe White would be another project buy

It’s difficult to get too excited for project signings. Especially when you see how many of them fail to make an impact at Celtic Park.

Celtic recruited the likes of Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide to moderate fanfare earlier this year. However, neither man is even close to first-team ready as Ange Postecoglou continues to snub the idea of giving them game-time.

White would be highly unlikely to make the breakthrough into the senior side anytime soon. It’s more likely that he would spend time in the academy.

Celtic have also signed the likes of Bosun Lawal and Joey Dawson from English clubs this year. Both operate with the Celtic B team at the moment. It’s likely that is where White would have to start if we made our move.

But this also sounds like a player that’s still eyeing a future in the North East of England. Given he’s one of their top prospects, you have to imagine a new contract will still be discussed.

Should they fail to wrap things up over the next couple of months of course, the opportunity is there for Celtic to put doubts in the player’s mind. We’ll see what happens with this one.
