A report claims that Celtic want to sign out of contract Aberdeen midfielder Graeme Shinnie. Bristol Live has disclosed that the Hoops are set to battle it out with Championship side Bristol City and Glasgow rivals Rangers for the player.

Shinnie has been one of Aberdeen’s most important players under the management of Derek McInnes. His contract expires at the end of the season, and he would be a decent pick-up on a free transfer.

Move would be a surprise

Should Shinnie join Celtic, he could be a long-term replacement for Scott Brown. However, on the face of it, it would be a bit of a surprise if Shinnie joined Celtic.

The Hoops have a surplus of midfielders. There is the aforementioned Scott Brown. There is also Callum McGregor, one of the Hoops’ most important players. The chances of McGregor losing his place in the team to Shinnie are remote.

Likely to be a squad player

Not to mention Nir Bitton, Ryan Christie, Olivier Ntcham the Hoops have too many midfielders. If Shinnie was to move to Celtic, it is highly unlikely that he would be a first team regular for the Bhoys. He is far more likely to be a squad player.

Would that appeal to Shinnie? That is hard to say. There is no doubt that Shinnie would be a decent signing for the Hoops. But the chances of it happening would seem to be relatively slim.
