Celtic winger Jonny Hayes could be set for a return to his former side Aberdeen.

Teamtalk reports that the clubs are close to ‘some sort of compromise’ that would lead to Hayes returning to Pittodire.

The report does not specify if the move will be a loan or permanent one.

The news has come as a bit of a surprise.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes had earlier claimed, as reported by the Press and Journal, that Hayes was unlikely to return to the Dons.

The Scottish Sun first reported on Aberdeen wanting to bring Hayes back to Pittodrie.

It was thought that Hayes’ wages could scupper any potential deal.

However, since then things may have changed.

Hayes joined the Hoops in 2017, but has failed to hold down a permanent position in the team.

This season he started the first league game of the campaign, a 3-1 win over Livingston.

But he hasn’t kicked on since then, and most weeks has found himself on the bench.

If he wants to play every week, it is in his interest to leave Celtic Park.

There’s no doubt that Celtic would like the transfer to be a permanent one.

But if that can’t happen for now, perhaps a loan deal is more realistic.

There could even be an option to buy at the end of the loan deal.

You couldn’t blame Hayes for wanting to join Celtic, but it just hasn’t worked out for him.

If he leaves he will go with the best wishes of the fans.
