Celtic are in discussions with midfielder Callum McGregor about a new, more lucrative contract, The Scottish Sun report.

McGregor signed his last deal less than a year ago but the sands have shifted somewhat on his situation at the Hoops.

Leicester City were reported to have been interesting in a deal for him during the summer transfer window.

Celtic managed to rebuff that, but in the wake of such interest, Neil Lennon has confirmed the club are now looking to reward the player.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “We held on to him and it’s important we do the right thing with him.

“The principled thing is to give him a new deal, an improved contract, because he deserves it.

“In the talks that we’ve had so far, Callum has been receptive to staying.”

On the face of things that’s good news for the Hoops. Keeping McGregor around should be one of our big priorities over the next 12 months.

Now 26 years old, he has a decision to make on whether he wants to commit his best years to Celtic.

Some Celtic fans though have taken a more cynical view of the discussions, feeling that any new contract would simply be a stopgap ahead of a big money exit next summer.

Players such as Kieran Tierney and Stuart Armstrong had signed new contracts in recent years before being moved on not too long after.
