In just over one year’s time, Celtic defender Anthony Ralston could be playing at World Cup. How’s that for progress?

Ralston has had a whirlwind six months since signing a new contract at the club.

Embracing the methods of new manager Ange Postecoglou, the right-back has been one of the success stories so far this season.

He’s taken the opportunity of a fresh start almost like no one else at the club, becoming the prime pick on the right flank ahead of all contenders including Croatian international Josip Juranovic.

This weekend, it was confirmed he’d taken the next step in his development by being called up to the Scotland national team. And not before time.

It took a suspension for Nathan Patterson and Stephen O’Donnell may well start ahead of him tonight at Denmark, but Ralston is now involved with Steve Clarke’s squad.

Given the trajectory of this season’s performances, it surely won’t be long before he is being outright picked ahead of O’Donnell in future squads.

Ralston and Patterson may well be the go-to right-back options for Scotland for years to come. The Celtic defender could go from the verge of a club exit to becoming a star for the Bhoys and his country.

Going by the reaction to the announcement of his call-up, Celtic supporters are desperate to see him do well for his country whether that’s tonight or in the future.
