For most of this season, Jozo Simunovic has been on the fringes of the Celtic side. He may have made 23 appearances overall, but only 13 have come in the league.
At times, he has found himself as fourth choice centre-back, behind the likes of Kristoffer Ajer, Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata.
Unlikely return to the side
However, with Boyata now out for the rest of the season, Simunovic has a chance of an unlikely redemption story.
He started for Celtic in their most recent game, the 0-0 draw with Livingston. Interestingly, he played as part of a back three.
It is not yet known if Neil Lennon will choose to go for a back three for the Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen. If he does though, Simunvoic seems certain to start.
A good sign for the player
Even if Simunovic doesn’t get the nod to start the game, it is a good sign for the player that Neil Lennon has faith in him.
It seemed at one stage that Simunovic would go on to be a mainstay for Celtic for years to come. He was a key man in the invincible treble season of 2016-17.
Since then however, injuries and a loss of form have taken their toll on the player. However, circumstances could dictate that the player has a role to play in the last few weeks of the season. That would complete an unlikely redemption story for a player who looked to be an outcast for much of the season.
