Celtic boss Neil Lennon recently made some interesting comments which may have flown under the radar. He revealed that he is planning to ‘freshen things up’ after the winter break.
“If I can get our No.1 targets, great. If we can’t then we will just freshen things up” Lennon said, as quoted by the Herald, as he discussed Celtic’s transfer plans for January.
That is an intriguing statement for the Hoops boss to make. It seems that he has recognised that in December the Hoops’ performances were a bit stale.
Performances weren’t great in run-up to winter break
For sure Celtic were able to win games for the most part, but the performances weren’t all that great. The worst of them all came in the 2-1 loss to Rangers in the last fixture before the winter break.
It will be interesting to see how Lennon goes about freshening up the team. Of course, the best way to do that is to sign some players. But his comments seem to suggest that changes will be made even if the Hoops don’t sign a host of players.
Ideal time for midfielder to come back into side
Perhaps that means giving a chance to players that have not featured often for the first-team in recent weeks. Tom Rogic could be an ideal candidate for that. He has not played for Celtic recently. He could provide a freshness to the team that looked to have been lacking in the run-up to the transfer window.
Neil Lennon knows that in a close title race, every decision he makes will be important. However, there doesn’t seem to be much wrong with the idea of freshening the team up. Indeed, it could send a message to the players that are dropped that they have to up their game.
It will be interesting to see just how many changes Neil Lennon makes to his side when the Hoops return to action against Partick Thistle next Saturday. That game could be the first example of the Celtic boss freshening up his squad which has looked jaded.
