Celtic boss Neil Lennon was asked about Odsonne Edouard’s chances of playing in the Betfred Cup Final following Wednesday night’s game over Hamilton.

Edouard is one of Celtic’s main men, and his potential absence through injury would be a blow for the Hoops. However, the Celtic boss was giving little away about his striker’s fitness.

“Odsonne Edouard was out running today and will be assessed again tomorrow and maybe train on Friday” he said, as quoted by the Celtic Twitter account.

Those comments don’t really say a lot about Edouard’s chances of playing in the game, and that is a smart move by the Hoops boss.

Better to keep opponents guessing about player

Why should he give Rangers a clue about the availability of one of Celtic’s most important players? It is better to keep them in the dark, and possibly spring a surprise by naming Edouard in the team on Sunday afternoon.

It sounds like the Hoops are going to give Edouard every chance of making the game at Hampden Park. That is no surprise, as he has been such an important player for the Hoops this season.

He also has an excellent record against Rangers, and they will no doubt fear coming up against him once again. However, if he can’t play due to injury then so be it. The Hoops have the squad that can cope with that, even if Edouard would be a big miss.

Player is integral to how team functions

Lennon will be keeping his cards close to his chest until the team is announced on Sunday. You would expect this to be the case for all of Celtic’s injury doubts for the game, but Edouard in particular. He is integral to the way Celtic play, and as Celtic have found in the last few fixtures, he is hard to replace as a striker, even though Lewis Morgan has done reasonably enough as his replacement.

Only time will tell if Edouard will feature on Sunday, but Lennon is being smart in not giving much away.
