The sudden lockdown in British football, as reported by BBC Sport, means that for the time being football players will have a lot of time on their hands.
That of course includes the Celtic squad, who instead of aiming to clinch nine in a row, will be left twiddling their thumbs as they wait for football to resume.
However, there is one player that can benefit from the break, even though he is in a run of good form at the moment – Callum McGregor.
McGregor has played an almost absurd amount of football in recent years. BBC Sport reported that McGregor played more football than another player in the world, in the first-half of the season.
Over 5,000 minutes played
The player also topped the list for minutes played in season 2018-19, a record-breaking 5,894 minutes for club and country, as reported by Celtic’s official website.
That is probably too much football, which could eventually lead to burnout. Indeed, so far this season McGregor has already played 50 games this season.
The good news is that McGregor has been in excellent form for the Hoops recently, and has scored 13 goals this season. However, injuries might have caught sooner rather than later.
Needed break for arguably a year
The enforced rest is undeniably an irritation for the players. However, McGregor can benefit from the break that arguably he has needed for over a year.
By the time the Hoops are ready to play football again, he will be fully fit and ready to help the side go for – hopefully – 10 in a row.
This won’t be the way that McGregor wanted to get a break. No doubt he wanted to help the Hoops win nine and a row and a fourth successive domestic treble.
However, we are not living in normal footballing times at the moment. Therefore, McGregor gets this enforced rest. Hopefully it will do him good when the Hoops return to action.
