Celtic’s Callum McGregor has been on an excellent run of form recently.
The Hoops midfielder’s game looks to have got even better since Neil Lennon elected to move to a 3-5-2 formation following the winter break.
In the games after the winter break McGregor seems to hit a purple patch of form. He has scored three goals and has four assists.
His good run continued in the 4-0 win over Motherwell on Wednesday night.
McGregor’s pass set up Leigh Griffiths for Celtic’s second goal. Perhaps even more impressive was McGregor finish which put Celtic 3-0 ahead.
Perhaps one of his best ever Hoops goals
He got on the end of a flowing move and volleyed the ball home from the edge of the penalty box. It has to go down as one of the best goals McGregor has ever scored for Celtic.
Some Celtic fans on social media were impressed with McGregor’s performance against Motherwell.
One fan claimed that the player was the best midfielder to come through the ranks at the club since the legendary Paul McStay.
Another predicted that the player would be Celtic’s next captain, whilst another fan went as far as to compare McGregor to the great Argentinian midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme, who was a key man in the Villarreal side of the mid 200s.
Here are some of the best reactions from social media to McGregor’s performance against Motherwell:
Edouard gets the headlines. But Callum McGregor was absolutely outstanding tonight.

I think it is becoming clear that Callum McGregor is the best midfielder to come out of Celtic’s youth system since Paul McStay. Nowhere near what McStay was but boy does that bhoy know how to run and influence a game.

We worry about losing French Eddy,& right so..unbelievable level of performance this season but Callum McGregor is instrumental in everything we do without really being noticed too much unless he scores.wouldn’t consider selling him to anybody this summer #handsoff #Celtic

When you see how well McGregor performed against Motherwell, it is easy to see why he is one of the few players at Celtic that can be considered a first pick no matter the opposition.
His work rate is phenomenal, and seems suited to how Neil Lennon wants Celtic to play.
He seems to be getting better as the season goes on, and hopefully his current purple patch lasts for a good while longer yet.
