The pre-Celtic Scott Brown video Rangers fans will never live down
“Scott Brown, we’re gonna take Scott Brown,” were the words the 4,000 or so Rangers fans chanted at the end of the 2006/07 season. [YouTube]
Fast forward 14 years and the iconic midfielder is departing Glasgow after winning 23 trophies – or one every 28 games.
Great work all round then. Wait, what do you mean he signed for Celtic?
Yes, it was in-fact the glorious Hoops who “took” Brown from Hibs And it must be looked back as one of the most momentous signings in Scottish football history.
Brown really has achieved it all in the decade and a half since swapping Edinburgh for Glasgow.
He’s won every domestic trophy at least six times. Six. Ten leagues titles are included in that haul along with a number of other more personal records.
In contrast, Rangers’ title victory this season is their first major trophy in a decade.
Rangers bitterness may come from that Easter Road sing-song
Yet, some would have you believe that Brown has been a flop. That he has been chased into retirement by Steven Davis and Glen Kamara. That he’s had it easy every season.
Brown’s 12 most recent trophy wins arrived when Rangers were back in the league. He’s won six trophies since Steven Gerrard arrived in Glasgow three years ago.
Many of his successes came at the end of campaigns when he had been written off, told that he would be put in his place by Joey Barton, Graham Dorrans, Greg Docherty or some other Rangers midfielder.
It’s funny that those same people will now trot out the same excuse that Brown had no competition at the time. It is just that: an excuse.
Perhaps that dismissal comes from the fact that the Ibrox side didn’t sign the iconic midfielder.
That they instead plumped for the injury prone Kevin Thomson who was last seen playing for Tranent Juniors.
Anyway, everyone knows the facts. And everyone can count the honours.
In other news, Celtic fans have been putting their Aberdeen counterparts in their place over some feelings towards Scott Brown
