Celtic may be set to battle it out with former manager Brendan Rodgers to land a transfer target. L’Equipe is reporting that Celtic, Rodgers’ Leicester City, and Newcastle are interested in signing Le Mans midfielder Stephane Diarra.
The player, who is 20, features on the right side of midfield for the team who play in the French second division. So far this season the player has made 16 appearances for Le Mans, and has scored three goals.
Could provide competition for Hoops mainstay
Diarra would seem to be a player that is for the future, if he joined the Hoops. Neil Lennon’s side do have a player who is a mainstay on the right side of midfield in James Forrest. However, perhaps the club feel that there is a need for competition for Forrest in the side. That could be provided by Diarra.
It is a promising sign for the player that despite playing in the French second tier, a trio of high profile clubs are interested in him.
Will Hoops move for player in January?
Will Celtic make a move for the player in January? That remains to be seen. There are perhaps more pressing matters to be attended to in January, a new striker first, maybe. However, if Celtic feel that Diarra is a player that can make a contribution in the future then he should be signed.
Brendan Rodgers isn’t the most popular man amongst the Celtic support after leaving the club to join Leicester during last season. Beating Rodgers to a player would give the Hoops fans some pleasure you would imagine. It will be interesting to see if the Hoops. Leicester or indeed Newcastle opt to make a move for the player in January.
