Does Celtic’s pursuit of David Turnbull rule out a move for Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo? The Hoops were rumoured to be in for the 22-year-old Englishman alongside rivals Rangers but may no longer require another midfielder following the likely capture of Turnbull.
The youngster was widely understood to have a choice between the two Glasgow clubs. But do Celtic really need him?
If Turnbull joins then we’ll have ten midfield options at the club. Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie, Scott Brown are all likely to continue as stand-out players with Turnbull adding to the Scottish contingent.
Tom Rogic will also be a key player if he can get his form back while Ewan Henderson should get the odd opportunity.
Neil Lennon is then left with four players who’s Celtic careers are at a crossroads. Nir Bitton should probably be kept round to add a bit of depth to the area while Eboue Kouassi and Youssouff Mulumbu could be moved on.
Olivier Ntcham looks pretty likely to leave the club given all of the interest in him. However, the loss of the inconsistent Frenchman doesn’t seem quite as large as it did a couple of weeks ago.
We should be left with five good centre-midfield options plus Tom Rogic and Ewan Henderson able to play behind the striker. Turnbull can play there too so it will be interesting to see where Lennon prefers him.
The area us undoubtedly our strongest one at present and it’s difficult to see where Aribo would fit in. If he chooses Celtic then so be it, but he’ll be no great loss if he doesn’t.
