Gary Hooper may not be making a return to Celtic Park after all. In May, the Sun reported that the former Hoops talisman was a potential target for Neil Lennon if the Northern Irishman got the gig on a permanent basis.
Lennon has now been in post for almost a week and is yet to make any sort of move for the Englishman.
He may have to move fast though if he wants his man. The Daily Star have reported in their print edition (6th June) that the 31-year-old is subject of a “mega-bucks offer” from China.
Celtic fans will remember Hooper fondly. The forward netted an impressive 82 goals in 128 starts for the club between 2010 and 2013. He was a huge player under Neil Lennon and notched goals in Glasgow derbies and European clashes alike.
However, he seems to be a much diminished character from those days. Hooper played just 318 minutes of football for Sheffield Wednesday last season. He notched one goal but had injury and form problems which let to his departure from Hillsborough.
In contrast, Scotland forward Steven Fletcher played 40 games for the Owls. Celtic fans would baulk at the idea of signing Fletcher so surely Hooper should be even further down the pecking order.
The Englishman is an inferior player to Odsonne Edouard. Leigh Griffiths is also a more rounded footballer while we’re still yet to see what the promising Vakoun Issouf Bayo can offer. For now, it should be a no to Hooper.
