The interest from Brendan Rodgers for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard isn’t surprising. According to the Daily Record, Leicester are eyeing a £30 million bid for the striker.
The Hoops’ record signing has been a revelation since joining from PSG originally on loan. Unfortunately, good Celtic strikers get eaten up by the money rich clubs and French Eddy seems no different.
Rodgers’ words during his time at Hoops gaffer suggest the Irishman was always going to bid for him.
Brendan Rodgers on Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard in 2018
The 21-year-old has already done so much in his short professional career. Trebles won, European goals, top scorer, derby goals – everything fans want in a Celtic player.
However, Rodgers specifically picked out the Frenchman for a certain accolade when he managed the Celts. In March 2018 on Celtic TV, the Irishman labelled Edouard as one of the best youth player he’s had under his watch.
He said: “He is one of the best young players I have worked with – his movement, his touch, his all-round play.
“He made himself a hero with the Celtic supporters, which is great for him.”
This is a massive compliment coming from Rodgers who has worked around a lot of youth players in his time.
The former Chelsea youth coach is now onto pastures new while Edouard continues to bang them in.
A bid for Edouard from Leicester City was always in the waiting – even if Neil Lennon doesn’t want it.
French Eddy: The focal point for Leicester City attack?
The Foxes are flying under Rodgers, sitting second in the English Premier League. However, their star hitman Jamie Vardy is getting into his twilight years and there isn’t a lot of competition.
Rodgers would be looking at Edouard to come in and be Vardy’s competitor before taking his mantle.
There are obviously areas of the Frenchman’s game that need to be more refined for the Premier League. But, he is still young and will be able to get the time and freedom to improve under Rodgers’ guidance.
He already knows his strengths and weaknesses and what he will be able to bring to the club.
Everyone knows if Edouard applies himself then his ceiling will be high and Leicester could be the next logical step. Nevertheless, Lennon and the Hoops board must make sure that Edouard doesn’t leave now at such an important time.
