Celtic are reported to be interested in signing Dutch midfielder Mark Diemers. According to Voetbal International, the Hoops are keen on the 25-year-old midfielder who is said to be attracting interest from a number of clubs around Europe.
Diemers netted eight goals for Eredivisie side Fortuna Sittard as they finished just outside of the relegation places this season. The midfielder, who used to ply his trade for Utrecht, also piled in with seven assists.
The report also claims that German sides Mainz, Frankfurt and Hamburg are interested in taking Diemers on board.
Would Celtic spend without a manager?
The fact Celtic are without a permanent manager at the moment is likely to curtail any immediate move for Diemers. It would make no sense for the Hoops to spend a chunk of money on the Dutchman only for a new manager to come in and not fancy him.
It is, however, encouraging to see that the club are taking an active view in proceedings. The Dutch league has been a pretty profitable place for Celtic over the past decade or so. Both Virgil Van Dijk and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink were great additions to their respective sides with the former going on to have a stellar career.
Celtic could probably shop in the lower half of the Eredivisie without spending too much money. The Dutch top-flight is a strong division but is also has its weaker teams at the bottom. Players from the likes of Fortuna Sittard would probably jump at the chance to play for a club of Celtic’s standing.
