He may have made a big mistake yesterday, but Ross Doohan is flying over at Ayr United.

Indeed, the Celtic young star has been progressing extremely well under the radar with the Honest Men. So far this season, Doohan has had a fantastic 27 appearances at the Championship club. Throughout that period, he’s bagged an impressive 14 clean sheets.

Of course, despite his good progress, he was in the headlines for the wrong reasons yesterday. The youngster made a poor error for Ayr that cost them against Falkirk. Rangers loan-star Zack Rudden converted from close-range, condemning Ayr to their first loss in 11 games.

Outside of that, however, everything has been going swimmingly for Doohan this season. The Hoops academy star has lost just four times during his loan period, with just three of those coming in the league.

His form has been going under the radar at Ayr, and it’s a spell Doohan certainly could’ve done with. He’s still contracted to stay at United until the end of the season, and it’ll be intriguing to see if he can get the Championship side promoted. As it stands, they sit second in the Championship table and just three points behind Ross County at the top.

Plenty of progress to be made yet

As it stands, Doohan is still miles from the first-team at Parkhead. At just 20-years of age, however, there’s plenty of time for him to be challenging for the honour to be Celtic’s number one.

It’s not the first loan spell that Doohan has had in recent years either.

His first senior spell away from the club came at Greenock Morton last season. Despite it appearing to be a good move on paper, he never made a single appearance throughout that period.

Therefore, this is a key moment for Doohan in his career. His first senior spell away from the club where he’s making an impact, and it should provide him with a real boost.

The next stage for Doohan after this spell has to be a period at a Scottish Premiership club. For now, however, it’s great to see the Hoops youngster playing so well.
