Celtic goalkeeper Ross Doohan bags second Premiership clean sheet of his career

Celtic goalkeeper Ross Doohan managed to secure only the second Premiership clean sheet of his career yesterday.

Doohan made only his second appearance for Dundee United in their final league match of the season at St Mirren. The Lennoxtown academy graduate produced a vital stop to deny Eamonn Brophy when one-on-one. In the end, he would keep on his second-ever shutout in Scotland’s top flight.

His first came earlier this season with Ross County during a 0-0 clash with Hibernian in Dingwall. His only other appearance for United this season came in the 2-2 draw against Motherwell last weekend.

Doohan was shipped out to Tannadice back on an emergency loan deal after an injury to Benjamin Siegrist. Since then, he’s played as backup to Deniz Mehmet. However, after bagging only his second outing for the Arabs, Doohan proved he can be a positive asset for a club next season.

It’s been frustrating for him to only play two games during his loan spell. Especially considering County only gave him five outings during the first half of the campaign. But at the very least, it’s seven matches he wouldn’t have gotten at Celtic.

Ross Doohan needs further Premiership experience

Celtic’s best solution when it comes to Doohan’s future is that a Premiership club takes a chance on him. And not as a backup either. We could do with a club looking to make Doohan their number one and see what he’s got.

The youngster hasn’t been able to play regular football since the two years he spent with Ayr United in the Championship. Ross managed to bag 30 clean sheets in 80 appearances for the second-tier side as he racked up some impressive figures [Transfermarkt].

But Doohan needs to watch he doesn’t drop behind his other academy graduates. Conor Hazard, for example, has recently signed a new contract extension and has been given a run in the team this season. Doohan’s next move is a vitally important one.

The 23-year-old has done it in the Championship. A drop down to Scotland’s second-tier doesn’t feel as though it would be productive. He needs to be playing top flight football at his age if he’s to make it at Celtic. If he fails to win a move to one this summer? It’s difficult to see how he can stake a claim to be a future number one at Celtic.

Doohan’s contract at Celtic expires in 2022 [Transfermarkt]. You have to imagine that only a rip-roaring season in Scotland’s top flight will ensure he’s given a new extension. For the truth is, at 23, we need to start seeing some proper progression.

His clean sheet in Paisley was a nice milestone for him. But it’s how his next 12 months go that will really shape his long-term future.
