First-Team Squad

Celtic’s first-team squad of 38 players has been built for the 2023/24 season under manager Brendan Rodgers. Their squad includes four goalkeepers, 12 defenders, 13 midfielders and nine attackers, including all senior players currently away from Celtic Park on loan transfers.

Celtic goalkeepers

Joe Hart

Ange Postecoglou signed Joe Hart from Tottenham Hotspur for a bargain £1m in his first transfer window with Celtic. He instantly became their No1 and has produced an array of vital saves.

Scott Bain

Scott Bain secured a permanent transfer to Celtic in July 2018 following his initial loan from Dundee FC. He has served as a valuable squad player but rarely features under Postecoglou.

Benjamin Siegrist

Benjamin Siegrist elected to join Celtic in 2022 after leaving Dundee United at the end of his contract. But Postecoglou has only held the Swiss stopper to a reserve role with the Bhoys.

Tobi Oluwayemi (on loan to FC Admira Wacker Modling until June 2024)

Celtic signed Tobi Oluwayemi in 2019 after an impressive spell in Tottenham’s academy side. He has since risen through the Bhoys’ ranks and is now out on loan with Irish side Cork City.

Celtic defenders

Alistair Johnston

Postecoglou strengthened the Celtic first-team in January 2023 with a £3m move for Alistair Johnston of Montreal. The Canada star immediately established himself as their first-choice.

Greg Taylor

Kilmarnock sold Greg Taylor to Celtic for £1.5m in 2019 while the defender renewed his deal in 2021. Injuries have occasionally limited his minutes but Taylor often gives a dependable option.

Gustaf Lagerbielke

Celtic secured the signing of Gustaf Lagerbielke from Elfsborg in August 2023 for £3m for his first move away from the defender’s native Sweden. The defender started his career at AIK Solna before joining Elfsborg in 2021.

Liam Scales

Liam Scales left Shamrock Rovers after just 18 months to join Celtic in 2021. Yet he only held a peripheral role under Postecoglou before going on loan to Aberdeen for the 2022/23 campaign.

Nat Phillips

Brendan Rodgers returned to his old stomping ground, Liverpool, to sign Nat Phillips on loan for Celtic in August 2023. The centre-half switched Anfield for Celtic Park on a short-term deal running to January 2024.

Maik Nawrocki

Celtic paid Legia Warsaw £5m to sign Maik Nawrocki in July 2023 as Rodgers sought to strengthen his defensive options. The Polish centre-back, who graduated from Werder Bremen’s academy, left the Ekstraklasa outfit after two years and 60 games.

Yuki Kobayashi

Postecoglou raided the J-League to sign Yuki Kobayashi from Vissel Kobe in November 2022. He officially joined Celtic in the following January and has offered the Bhoys valuable depth.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Celtic initially signed Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan before agreeing to a £6m transfer with Tottenham in June 2022. The American has been a revelation and a vital player at Celtic Park.

Alexandro Bernabei

Celtic signed Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus in his native Argentina for £3.75m in 2022. The defender has since offered Postecoglou depth and a sporadic creative threat in his position.

Adam Montgomery (on loan to Fleetwood Town until June 2024)

Celtic gave Adam Montgomery his first professional contract in 2019 after a decade in their academy. He has since enjoyed loan spells with Aberdeen and St Johnstone to gain minutes.

Anthony Ralston

Anthony Ralston signed for Celtic on his 10th birthday and became a first-team regular at 18 years old. The Scotland international has also enjoyed loan spells with Queen’s Park, Dundee United and St Johnstone. While he now offers Postecoglou a creative presence whenever fit.

Stephen Welsh

Celtic ushered Stephen Welsh into their first-team squad in 2018 after starting his career in their academy ranks. The defender has since enjoyed a loan transfer with Greenock Morton.

Celtic midfielders

David Turnbull

Motherwell sold David Turnbull to Celtic for £3m in 2020 a year after his dream transfer had fallen through. He has since held a key role in adding several titles to Celtic’s trophy cabinet.

Odin Thiago Holm

Celtic signed Odin Thiago Holm from Valerenga in June 2023 for £2.5m, plus a 15% sell-on fee, as their first new signing of the summer. The Norway talent quit the Eliteserien outfit after four years and 76 senior games. The Bhoys offered Holm his first move away from Norway.

James McCarthy

James McCarthy secured a transfer to his boyhood club, Celtic, in 2021 after leaving Crystal Palace. He had a nightmare with injuries at Selhurst Park, which have continued in Glasgow.

Yosuke Ideguchi (on loan to Avispa Fukuoka until December 2023)

Yosuke Ideguchi joined Celtic in 2022 for £800k but sustained an injury before he could truly establish himself. The midfielder would later return to Japan on loan with Avispa Fukuoka.

Kwon Hyeok-Kyu

Celtic paid South Korean side Busan I-Park £1m to sign Kwon Hyeok-Kyu in July 2023 to add another midfielder to their first-team squad. The Busan native left the Gudeok Stadium after 44 first-team appearances for his academy club.

Tomoki Iwata

Postecoglou returned to his former club, Yokohama F Marinos, in January 2023 for Japanese Player of the Year, Tomoki Iwata. He joined in an initial loan that carried an obligation to buy.

Liam Shaw (on loan to Wigan Athletic until June 2024)

Neil Lennon convinced Liam Shaw to sign a pre-contract at Celtic in February 2021 to leave Sheffield Wednesday. But he failed to establish himself before joining Morecambe on loan.

Paulo Bernardo

Celtic secured a deadline day deal with Benfica to sign Paulo Bernardo on a season-long loan in September 2023. The Bhoys further secured an option to buy the Almada native, who graduated from As Aguias’ academy for 26 senior appearances.

Matt O’Riley

Postecoglou convinced Matt O’Riley to leave MK Dons for Celtic in 2022 for a bargain £1.5m. He had only spent a year in Milton Keynes but is now a pivotal presence in the Bhoys’ squad.

Reo Hatate

Kawasaki Frontale sold Reo Hatate to Celtic in 2022 for just £1.5m. The Japan midfielder has been a sensation since arriving at Celtic Park as a dynamic threat within their engine room.

Callum McGregor

Callum McGregor is one of the brightest talents to emerge from Celtic’s academy and is the captain. The midfielder is the total talisman in Glasgow to set an incredibly high benchmark.

James Forrest

James Forrest is the longest-serving member of Celtic’s first-team squad having debuted in 2010 under Lennon. He first joined in his youth and boasts more than 100 goals and assists.

Mikey Johnston

Mikey Johnston made his Celtic debut in May 2017 and earned a senior contract soon after. But the Ireland international struggled to kick on before joining Vitoria Guimaraes on loan.

Celtic attackers

Luis Palma

Celtic fluttered £3.5m to add Luis Palma to their first-team squad from Aris Thessaloniki in August 2023. Rodgers bet on the Honduras winger’s potential after scoring 17 and assisting 11 goals in 52 games across his 19 months in Greece.

Kyogo Furuhashi

Postecoglou secured a £4.5m transfer from Vissel Kobe for Kyogo Furuhashi in 2021. He had the task of replacing Odsonne Edouard but exceeded all expectations as a sensational striker.

Sead Haksabanovic (on loan to Stoke City until June 2024)

Rubin Kazan accepted a £3m hit to sell Sead Haksabanovic to Celtic for £2.5m in 2022. The winger has since offered Postecoglou solid attacking depth and a sporadic goal threat so far.

Liel Abada

Celtic secured a £3.5m move with Maccabi Petah Tikva for Liel Abada in 2021 as Postecoglou swooped quickly for the winger. The Israel forward has since shown a regular creative threat.

Yang Hyun-Jun

Gangwon FC agreed to sell Yang Hyun-Jun to Celtic in July 2023 after just two years in their first-team squad. He left the K-League outfit for £2m after pushing to secure a transfer to Celtic Park as the division’s reigning Young Player of the Year.

Oh Hyeon-Gyu

Suwon Samsung Bluewings sold Oh Hyeon-Gyu to Celtic in January 2023 for £2.5m on a five-year contract. He filled Giorgos Giakoumakis’ void as Kyogo’s understudy after a prolific 2022.

Marco Tilio

Celtic snapped up Marco Tilio in a transfer from Melbourne City after the winger helped the AAMI Park side win the A-League. The Sydney native and Australia ace spent three years at Melbourne City. He scored 20 and assisted 19 goals whilst at the City Football Group outfit.

Johnny Kenny (on loan to Shamrock Rovers until November 2023)

Celtic snapped up Sligo Rovers prospect Johnny Kenny in 2022. The striker has since secured loan spells with Queen’s Park and Shamrock Rovers to further his experiences in a first-team.

Daizen Maeda

Postecoglou reunited with his former Yokohama striker Daizen Maeda in 2022. The forward initially moved to Celtic on loan with a £1.5m option to buy. He has since given the Bhoys a versatile attacking threat with a simply sublime work rate to cause defenders endless issues.
