Why today is a big one for these two Celtic players

Our season may officially be over, but today’s still a massively nerve-racking day for two Celtic players in particular.

There are several Celtic stars that know their place at Euro 2020 is secured. Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie, and Greg Taylor won’t have any fears over their selection. They’ve consistently been part of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad throughout the qualifying campaign. There’s nothing to suggest things will be different this time.

But it’s a different kettle of fish when talking about David Turnbull and Leigh Griffiths.

Scotland will today announce who they’re taking to the Euros this summer. The Tartan Army has a triple-header against Czech Republic, England, and Croatia next month in the group stages of the competition.

Turnbull was voted PFA Scotland’s Young Player of the Year this season after a storming six months as one of Celtic’s key attacking outlets. With 10 goals and eight assists in all competitions this term, it’s been a season to remember for David on an individual level [Transfermarkt].

Better yet, the Scottish Sun has reported that Turnbull is in line to be given a call-up today. It remains to be seen if that’s the case given he hasn’t managed a single squad under Clarke yet.

A different story for Leigh Griffiths as Celtic players await their fate

Injuries to Kenny McLean and Ryan Jack have opened the door up for Turnbull. However, despite Griffiths likely looking to profit upon Oli McBurnie’s injury, that looks a lot more likely.

Clarke has given call-ups in recent times to the likes of Lawrence Shankland and Kevin Nisbet. Both the Dundee Utd and Hibs men have had fine individual campaigns, whilst Griffiths’ couldn’t have been any more different.

Question marks over his fitness were constant throughout the start of the season. But ultimately, Griffiths wasn’t trusted enough by Neil Lennon or John Kennedy this term. So much so that Leigh would only manage seven goals and 26 appearances this term [Transfermarkt].

He hasn’t managed to keep up with the form of his other Scotland striker rivals. With Lyndon Dykes likely to go with the squad, there aren’t many slots left for Griffiths to nab.

We know that on his day, Griff is the best striker Scotland could call up. The problem is we haven’t seen that this season. Whether it’s down to poor coaching or individual attitude, it doesn’t matter. Clarke will only be looking at his performances and goal return. It hasn’t been impressive enough for him to be a certainty today.

Even so, it’s still a big day for the Celtic duo as they eagerly await the Euros squad. Hopefully both can make it, but the early signs would point towards Turnbull’s inclusion more than Griff’s.

In other news, a coach who worked under Mowbray could reportedly be given another shot by Celtic.
