Davie Provan’s bizarre Manager of the Month remarks after Celtic boss’ success

Former Celtic striker Davie Provan has bizarrely stated that the Manager of the Month award should be scrapped after it was won by Ange Postecoglou.

Celtic sit 4 points behind Rangers in the Premiership title race, but they managed superb October run after coming back from the international break. A win at Pittodrie before the break was followed by wins at Motherwell and Hibernian along with success against St Johnstone at Celtic Park.

It was a month in which Postecoglou’s bond with the Hoops supporters grew stronger. Not surprising given how dominant his team was as they gained 2 points on Rangers in the title race.

But Provan, who appears extremely reluctant to give Ange any form of praise, has oddly called for an end to the award tradition.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Provan said: “I know our game needs every penny of sponsorship, but we need to knock this Manager of the Month nonsense on the head.

“Ange Postecoglou looked embarrassed posing with the award with Celtic sitting four points off the pace in the Premiership. The only month that matters is next May.”

Manager of the Month award gives in-form bosses appropriate recognition

This isn’t even a controversial or a hot-take from Provan here, it’s just utterly bizarre. Yes there are of course sponsorship obligations that come with the agreement between the league and Ladbrokes. But that’s not the main purpose of the Manager of the Month award.

All it does is simply highlight the manager who produced the most outstanding results of the month. It isn’t inflated or hyped up to be anything more than that. Nobody is saying that Postecoglou has been the manager of the year so far.

Celtic have simply been given some credit for their form under Ange in recent weeks. What’s so ludicrous about that? Supporters will hardly go over the top about it and the media certainly didn’t either. We all know they’re inconsequential at the end of a season, but it’s still appropriately highlighting those who deserve some acclaim for their form.

Why Provan appears to have such a problem just giving Ange some credit is both disappointing and unusual. He already had a random attack on him last week when he stated he should be under a lot more pressure [Scottish Sun].

Even when things are going well, Provan appears to have a rebuttal. When it comes to unnecessary media pressure, unfortunately Davie is falling into that trap when it comes to the Celtic boss.

Hopefully, Ange can be the one laughing in the summer when he takes the title off our rivals.
