Celtic-linked Erick Otieno last night produced a fantastic assist that showcased his forward-thinking attributes in AIK’s big 2-1 win over Helsingborgs.
Earlier today, it was reported by Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt that Erick Otieno had been looked at by Celtic. It comes after previously being scouted by the likes of Leicester City and Manchester City respectively [Aftonbladet].
And last night he showed why he’s been linked with some big moves in the past. After winning the ball in his own half, he surged all the way down the left flank before putting in a fine cross that was prodded home by Jordan Larsson. Take a look for yourself below:
The driving run down the left is no doubt what will catch many supporters’ eyes here. But you just can’t overlook the fact he’s made that run and then had the awareness to pick out Larsson at the back post.
To the casual observer, the cross to Larsson doesn’t even look like the obvious ball before Otieno strikes it. It shows a level of footballing intelligence to pick out Jordan here.
That moment would prove crucial too with AIK securing a 2-1 win and moving them up to joint top of the Allsvenskan table.
Erick Otieno showcases pace and precision with Celtic linked
It remains to be seen if we move for Otieno of course. But let’s not kid ourselves, he certainly showcased some fine skill in the above video.
In 53 appearances for AIK, he’s produced 8 assists in total. Not a bad return for a full-back, and if he did arrive at Parkhead, we would expect him to boost those numbers further.
Pace is a hugely important trait in the Ange Postecoglou backline if you’re a full-back. It’s vital that we manage to bring in a defender who can bomb forward on the underlap and get back in double quick time. Certainly, Otieno appears to have the speed to do that.

He’s also clearly well admired by his teammates. Sebastien Larsson stated after yesterday’s 2-1 win that AIK put too much responsibility on him and that he’s “not a player I would like to face” [Discovery Sport]. Jordan Larsson, meanwhile, was left stunned with his energy [VK].
Otieno certainly appears to have a promising reputation. And at 25, there’s plenty of development room there too. If Celtic do decide to make their move for him, it’s clips like the above that will have supporters excited.
Whether he’s the man for us? Time will tell.
