What Celtic star did ‘was pointless’ and cost Hoops in Bayern Munich Champions League tie

Celtic came flying out the traps vs Bayern Munich like a bat out of hell and thought they’d stunned the Germans early on.

Nicolas Kuhn did what he’s done plenty of times for the Scottish giants and cut inside off the right-flank within the first 30 seconds to curl the ball into the far corner.

Manuel Neuer had no chance between the sticks for the visitors and Parkhead erupted.

But the celebrations only lasted a matter of seconds before VAR spoiled all the fun for an offside after Adam Idah had ran across the goalkeeper’s line of vision and interfered with play to allow the ball to pass through his legs on the way into the net.

It was a brutal gut-punch for Celts who would go on to lose the first-leg 2-1 and, speaking on TNT Sports, former Hoops midfielder Stiliyan Petrov felt Idah’s run was an unnecessary one, “pointless” even, as it could have been different without costing the opener.

Adam Idah’s run for Nicolas Kuhn’s Celtic ‘goal’ was ‘pointless’

“It would have been fantastic but this is the first time Celtic have tried to maneuver the ball,” Petrov said.

“Kuhn loves coming inside and he’s scored so many goals that way.

“The question is does Idah have to make that run? Does he have to make that run across or if you wanna play for a rebound, go straight into it.

“Making that run there, I think it’s pointless.

“So it’s just unlucky it’s offside.”

Celtic kept the Champions League tie alive vs Bayern Munich

The adrenaline dipped after the early moment and Michael Olise had the ball in the net at the other end after Greg Taylor failed to clear inside the area.

Harry Kane then had the freedom of Glasgow early in the second-half to double Bayern’s lead but Daizen Maeda did what he does and reduced the deficit with a deft header late on.

Celtic know heading to Germany won’t be easy.

But the fact that the tie is still technically alive and to be fought for can only be seen as a positive considering what might have been with the number of chances the visitors missed.

The German media described the atmosphere as “hell” for their club who made the trip to end Celtic’s unbeaten home record.
