Report: Former Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon being considered for Scotland recall

Former Celtic shot-stopper Craig Gordon is being considered for a return to the Scotland fold, according to the Scottish Sun.

Gordon left Celtic only two months ago after making only just appearances for Neil Lennon’s treble-treble winners last year (Transfermarkt). With his contract expiring over the summer and having lost his place as Celtic’s number one, the experienced veteran moved to Hearts back in June.

However, it looks as though he could be set for an international call-up before he’s even played a game. The Scottish Sun believes that Scotland boss Steve Clarke has him firmly in his plans to compete alongside David Marshall and Jon McLaughlin respectively.

That’s despite the fact that Gordon hasn’t played for his country in two years. He last featured for Scotland in a 3-1 friendly loss to Portugal at Hampden in 2018.

In addition to that, he hasn’t played a full 90 minutes in 11 months. His last appearance for Celtic came in a 5-0 Betfred Cup win against Partick Thistle back in September 2019.

A boost for Gordon, but Bain overlooked?

For Gordon this will be pleasing news, especially if his call-up is confirmed for the double-header against Israel and Czech Republic.

However, you can’t help but wonder why Clarke would overlook Celtic shot-stopper Scott Bain.

Bain has managed to get a full pre-season under his belt, and has already featured in games against Nice, PSG, Ross County, and Hamilton respectively.

Gordon, meanwhile, isn’t even training at the moment. Hearts have been informed to shut down their training schedule by the joint response group in accordance with new guidelines regarding the global health pandemic (Edinburgh Live).

Therefore, Bain would be entitled to feel a little disappointed if his former glove rival got the nod ahead of him.

The current Celtic back-up stopper has his faults. We would all agree with that. But Gordon is hardly flawless either, and a swift return to the national team set-up seems a tad unfair on a player who is up to speed and has played regularly over the last month.

Regardless, we’ll see who Clarke goes for when the squad is officially announced.
