Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain looks set to miss out on making the Scotland squad today, according to the BBC.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke will today announce his squad to face Israel and Czech Republic in a Nations League double-header that will take place on September 4th and 7th.
If Bain isn’t selected this afternoon, it would mark the fourth consecutive squad selection in which he hasn’t been picked.
The Daily Record, meanwhile, believes that Clarke is looking towards the future of Scottish goalkeeping. As such, as well as regular shot-stoppers David Marshall and Jon McLaughlin, the Scotland boss is reportedly turning to Livingston youngster Robbie McCrorie.
In the previous Scotland squad, Portsmouth’s Craig MacGillivray kept Bain out, but it looks as though he’s set to be dropped for the upcoming double-header also.
Frustration for Bain who may be scratching his head
There’s no denying that McCrorie is a decent young goalkeeper, but he’s only just starting to make his way in the game. This season will be his first year playing regularly in the Premiership, and that’s if he even holds down his place at Livingston.
With Craig Gordon not yet back in competitive action, this looked like the ideal chance for Bain to get himself back into the Scotland squad.
The Celtic goalkeeper has managed to get a full pre-season under his belt and has played against the likes of Nice, PSG, Hibernian, and Ross County in recent times. He also played Celtic’s season-opener vs Hamilton just a few weeks ago.
Bain hasn’t featured for Scotland since a 2-0 win over San Marino back in March 2019. That followed a calamitous 90 minutes in Kazakhstan where he played 90 minutes of Scotland’s embarrassing 3-0 defeat to the minnows.
Clarke has yet to give Bain a game since his arrival as Scotland manager. However, the fact he’s now hardly giving him a place in the squad will frustrate the Parkhead man, who seemed to be in a decent enough position for a call-up this time around.
Bain is currently behind Vasilis Barkas in the Celtic pecking order, but his Scotland chances unfortunately don’t look like increasing anytime soon.
Expect the likes of Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie, Greg Taylor, and James Forrest to all be in today’s Scotland squad.
In other news, Celtic reportedly want to get a player in before they face Ferencvaros tomorrow night.
