Daily Mail journalist John McGarry has shed some light on the Odsonne Edouard sell-on fee agreed by Celtic and PSG.
There has been plenty of speculation and rumours regarding what chunk of any deal Les Parisiens will take. In the past, reports of a 40% clause in the agreement has led to raised eyebrows [Daily Mail].
Celtic look set to sell the Frenchman in the summer as his deal enters its final 12 months. But it’s unclear as to how much the Hoops could receive for his services given his struggles this season. Despite bagging 21 goals for the season [Transfermarkt], many came at a time when the Hoops were far behind in the title race.
But it looks as though Edouard’s sell-on fee doesn’t stretch to the dizzy heights reported in the past. According to Daily Mail journalist McGarry, he believes it’s a touch less.
Speaking on the Celtic Huddle Podcast yesterday, he said: “I don’t think it’s as high as that but I think it’s higher than normal. The club had a chance during Edouard’s loan period to get him for a reduced sell-on fee and hesitated.
“I think it’s in the region of 25-30%.”
Celtic can’t be blamed for meaty PSG clause; big fee all the more important now
It’s easy to point the finger of blame at Celtic here. But none of us know the details of the negotiations with PSG. They may have needed to be incentivised more in order to sell Eddy. Especially considering how highly rated he is in France.
McGarry’s statement here claiming that Celtic had a chance during the loan period to get him for a reduced sell-on fee is also interesting. But remember, Edouard wasn’t the star back then that he is now.
In fact, before his winner in a 3-2 derby win at Ibrox back in March 2018, nobody was calling for him to play more regularly. During his first year here, Eddy’s performances were plagued with inconsistencies. It was only after he announced himself in the final two derby games of the 2017/18 season that there was a clamour for us to sign him.
Celtic put their money where their mouth is with this one. You can have a go at the club for many things over the last couple of years. How they’ve gone about Edouard’s future, however, isn’t one of them. Especially considering we chose to hold onto him for a tilt at the 10 instead of cashing in.
Speaking before Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Dundee United, John Kennedy touched on Eddy’s valuation. He claimed that £15m would be too cheap for the club to sell in his view [Scottish Sun]. And that would be quite right. If Celtic sold for that value, they could see around £4.5m being sent over to France.
Celtic need to drum whatever they can out of Edouard’s departure. With PSG seemingly having a sizable sell-on fee, anything over £20m at least would be a start.
In other news, Jackie McNamara was left surprised at John Kennedy’s bemusing Tannadice decision.
