The England supporters have been touting Celtic-linked Eddie Howe for the under-21 job after another calamitous tournament.
Current England under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd is under severe pressure. The Young Lions’ chances in the current European Championships are now hanging by a threat after yesterday’s 2-0 loss to Portugal.
England must now beat Croatia on Wednesday and hope Portugal overcome Switzerland. Anything other than that and England will be staring at a group stage exit for the fifth time in their last six tournaments.
Boothroyd has been in charge of the under-21s since 2017. However, consistently under-achieving, England fans are looking for something new. Despite containing a squad that boasts the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tom Davies, England have lost their first two games of Euro 2021.
Howe, meanwhile, is proving to be a popular alternative choice. He’s been linked with both Celtic and Newcastle United in recent months [The Sun]. Yet, despite that, there doesn’t appear to be much progress with regards to his future destination being confirmed.
Celtic-linked Eddie Howe a man in demand
And that could be a problem for Celtic if England decide to make a move for him. If he lands this major FA gig, it would be a real hammer blow to the Hoops supporters who are intrigued by the prospect of the ex-Bournemouth man at Celtic Park.
Many may believe the under-21 job in isolation is underneath him. However, there could always be scope to pitch a plan that would see him become a future England manager if he performs well. If that was potentially on the table, then it would perhaps be a game-changer.

It’s all the more reason for Celtic to move quickly if they want him in. Howe won’t wait around forever, and if Premier League and FA jobs are being sent to his desk, that would put us at a major disadvantage.
Of course, Boothroyd will get the final game against Croatia to try and save his skin. Celtic fans may want to cheer them on too if it means the current boss stays in the gig, thus lessening the chances Howe has of the job.
In any case, many England fans have made their own minds up. It’s clear Howe would indeed be a popular choice amongst their support:
